Brunei Muara District Office

The Brunei Muara District Office was established in 1935. The District
Officer at that time was the Honourable Pehin Datu Perdana Menteri Dato
Laila Utama Awang Hj Ibrahim bin Md Jaafar. The function of the District
Officer was to execute some of the duties and responsibilities of the
British Resident which were generally related with the management of
community towards prosperity and peace. The District Officer was also
appointed as a First Class Court Magistrate, the Deputy Commissioner of
Labour and Assistant Collector Land Revenue. When he was appointed as
Assistant Collector of Land Revenue, the Brunei Muara District Office
became part of the District Office.
At the beginning of the Kampong Ayer Resettlement Scheme, the District
Officer was also given the responsibility to manage the scheme until the
establishment of Department of Resettlement. In 1959, his responsibility
was again increased when he was also appointed as the Chairman of the
Municipal Board of Bandar Brunei ( now, Bandar Seri Begawan ).
When Brunei administration was re-organised in 1966, District Office and
Brunei Muara District Land Office became separated. The latter was
directly under the control of Commissioner of Lands. On 8th February
1972, the Chairman of Municipal Department, hence the District Officer
ceased to become the Chairman. Later on, Labour and Judicial were
separated to become an individual Department respectively.
